Outlet & Switch Repair in Lawton

The most common call we get, and the one most often treated as cosmetic. A warm switch or a dead outlet is usually a connection problem, and connection problems are what start fires.

What these faults usually turn out to be

Almost all of them are connection problems. That matters, because a bad connection generates heat inside a wall rather than simply failing to work.

An outlet that has stopped working

Usually one of three things: a tripped GFCI somewhere else on the circuit, a failed device, or a connection that has worked loose. The order matters — a dead outlet with a warm faceplate is a different problem from a dead outlet that is cold, and the warm one is the urgent one. Where several outlets die together, the fault is upstream of all of them rather than in any one device.

A switch or outlet that is warm to the touch

Devices carrying a normal load stay near room temperature. Warmth means resistance where there should be none, and resistance means heat being generated inside a box you cannot see into. Back-stabbed connections, where the conductor is pushed into a spring clip rather than wrapped under a screw, are a frequent cause. So are aluminum conductors terminated on devices never rated for them.

Buzzing, crackling or a smell

Arcing. A connection is making and breaking many times a second, and each break is a small spark. This is the one symptom on this page that should not wait for a scheduled appointment: switch the circuit off at the panel if you know which breaker it is, and stop using it. A burning or fishy smell around a device means the plastic itself has started to overheat.

Plugs that fall out of the socket

The contacts inside have lost their tension, so the blade of the plug is held loosely. A loose contact is a small contact area, a small contact area heats up, and that heat degrades the contacts further. It is a real fault rather than wear you live with, and the device itself is inexpensive.

Missing GFCI protection

Kitchens, bathrooms, laundry areas, garages, unfinished basements, crawl spaces and anywhere outdoors need ground-fault protection. Many houses built before the requirement reached those areas have none, and the retrofit is usually straightforward. GFCI protects people from shock rather than protecting the wiring, which is why it matters so much in wet rooms.

Missing AFCI protection

Arc-fault protection addresses the failure the first three items on this list describe: it recognises the electrical signature of arcing and opens the circuit before the arc becomes a fire. It is required on most living-area circuits in new work, and can often be added at the panel on existing ones.

Older homes

Two-prong outlets, and what can honestly be done about them

Common in Lawton's older housing, and surrounded by more bad advice than anything else on this page.

A two-prong outlet means the circuit has no equipment ground. The fix that looks obvious — swapping in a three-prong receptacle — is the one option that makes things genuinely worse, because every appliance then carries a ground pin wired to nothing while appearing fully grounded. Three approaches actually work:

The middle option is the one homeowners reach for, and the only one that makes the outlet less safe than before.
  1. Fit a GFCI outlet, labelled as having no equipment ground. This is explicitly permitted, it protects people from shock, and it is usually the sensible answer where the wiring itself is sound.
  2. Run a ground to the outlet, where there is a practical route back to the panel or to grounded metal conduit. This produces a genuine three-prong outlet.
  3. Rewire the circuit, which is the right answer where the wiring is deteriorated rather than simply ungrounded.

Which one applies depends on what the wiring is and where it runs, so it is settled by looking rather than in advance. Where the insulation itself has gone brittle, the conversation moves to rewiring the affected circuits.

Get outlets and switches looked at

Useful to include: which rooms, whether anything is warm, discoloured or buzzing, and whether the outlets have two slots or three. Several small faults are normally handled in one visit, which costs less than several.

Can I replace a two-prong outlet with a three-prong one?

Not on its own, and this is the most common mistake we are called to undo. Fitting a three-prong receptacle to a circuit with no ground gives every appliance plugged into it a ground pin connected to nothing, so a fault that should trip the breaker instead energises the appliance case. It is worse than the two-prong outlet it replaced, because it looks safe. Three options genuinely work: a GFCI outlet labelled as having no equipment ground, running an actual ground, or rewiring the circuit.

Why does my GFCI keep tripping?

Usually because it is doing its job. A GFCI trips when the current returning does not match the current leaving, which means some of it is leaking somewhere it should not — often moisture in an outdoor box, or a failing appliance. Occasionally the device itself has failed, since they have a finite life and one fitted in the 1990s may well be past it. What matters is that a GFCI tripping repeatedly is reporting something, and the wrong response is to replace it with a standard outlet.

Is a warm light switch dangerous?

It is worth acting on. Dimmers are the exception, because they dissipate heat as part of normal operation and mild warmth is expected. A standard on-off switch should not be noticeably warm, and warmth points to a loose or corroded connection generating heat inside the box. Combined with buzzing, discolouration or any smell, treat it as urgent rather than scheduled.

How many outlets can be on one circuit?

There is no single number for general-purpose residential circuits. What governs is the load actually placed on them, plus the requirement for dedicated circuits in certain places. In practice the problem is rarely the count and usually the concentration: a bedroom where a space heater, a treadmill and a window unit share one 15 amp circuit will trip regardless of how many outlets are involved. Kitchen countertops, bathrooms and laundry areas are examples where dedicated circuits are specifically required.

Should I replace outlets that are simply old?

Age alone is not a reason, but two things are. If plugs no longer grip, the contacts have lost tension and the device is functionally worn out. If the outlets are ungrounded two-prong, or a room lacks GFCI protection where it is now required, replacement buys real safety rather than appearance. Otherwise a sound, tight, grounded outlet can stay where it is.
