Rewiring is rarely all-or-nothing. Most houses need specific circuits addressed for a specific reason, and knowing which is the difference between a targeted job and a gutted house.

The cases that actually call for rewiring

Each of these has a different answer, and two of them usually do not need a rewire at all.

Aluminum branch circuit wiring

Used widely in houses built between roughly the mid-1960s and mid-1970s. The cable itself is not the problem; the terminations are. Aluminum expands and contracts more than copper as it heats and cools, which works connections loose over decades, and it oxidises into a poor conductor where copper does not. The result is heat at outlets, switches and splices — which is why the previous page's warm-device symptoms and this one are so often the same house.

Cloth-insulated and rubber-insulated wiring

Older insulation becomes brittle with age and heat, and eventually falls away from the conductor when disturbed. The tell is often found only when something else is being worked on: a box opened for an unrelated repair reveals bare conductor where insulation used to be. Where this is widespread rather than local, patching circuit by circuit stops making sense.

Knob-and-tube wiring

Pre-1950s, and identifiable by ceramic knobs and tubes carrying individual conductors through framing. It has no equipment ground, it was never designed for modern loads, and it is frequently been extended with later wiring in ways nobody documented. Insurers sometimes take a position on it independently of whether it is currently faulting.

Ungrounded circuits throughout

A house with two-prong outlets in every room has no equipment ground anywhere. Where the wiring is otherwise sound this can be managed with ground-fault protection rather than rewiring, and that distinction is worth several thousand dollars — so it is worth establishing which case you are in before agreeing to anything.

Undersized service and too few circuits

Houses wired for the loads of fifty years ago have too few circuits for how a house is used now, which shows up as tripping breakers, extension cords as permanent fixtures, and a kitchen on one circuit. This is capacity rather than deterioration, and often the answer is added circuits and panel work rather than replacing existing wiring.

Previous work that was never inspected

Additions, converted garages and finished basements wired by whoever was available. Junctions buried in walls with no accessible box, circuits extended past what they can carry, cable stapled through joists without protection. This is the category where what is found changes the scope, which is why an honest quote for it says so.

Why the assessment comes before the number

Rewiring is the service where a quote given without looking is worth the least.

  1. Establish what wiring is actually present, and where. A house is rarely all one vintage — additions and remodels leave layers.
  2. Separate deterioration from capacity. Wiring that is failing needs replacing; wiring that is merely insufficient needs supplementing.
  3. Identify the circuits that carry real risk, so those come first if the work is staged.
  4. Assess the panel, because a rewire terminates there and an obsolete panel has to be part of the plan.
  5. Agree what is in scope, what is deferred, and what will only be known once walls are open.
  6. Permit and schedule inspection, because concealed work has to be seen before it is closed up.

Because a rewire terminates at the panel, this work and panel upgrades are frequently scoped together — and where the wiring is sound but ungrounded, the answer may be ground-fault protection at the devices instead, at a fraction of the cost.

Does aluminum wiring mean my house has to be rewired?

Usually not, and being told otherwise is a reason for a second opinion. The recognised remediation is to treat the connections rather than to replace the cable — most commonly by pigtailing a short length of copper to each aluminum conductor with connectors specifically listed for that purpose, at every device and splice. Devices rated for aluminum are also available. Full replacement is reserved for cases where the wiring has additional problems. The critical part is that the connectors are listed for joining the two metals, because ordinary wire nuts on an aluminum-to-copper joint create precisely the failure being fixed.

Can a house be rewired without tearing out the walls?

Partly, and how much depends on the house rather than on technique. Accessible attics, crawl spaces and basements are what make it possible to run new cable with limited opening up, and single-storey houses on a crawl space — common in Lawton — are among the more straightforward. Some cutting is normally unavoidable, particularly at wall plates and in interior partitions. What is realistic is established by looking at the actual routes, not from a description over the phone.

Can rewiring be done a bit at a time?

Often yes, and it is frequently the sensible way. Circuits can be prioritised by risk and by disruption: kitchen and bathroom circuits, anything showing signs of heat, and anything feeding a bedroom generally come before a rarely used spare room. Staging means each phase is a complete, inspected piece of work rather than a house left half-finished, so it needs planning as a sequence at the start.

How do I know whether my wiring is a problem or just old?

Age on its own is not a fault. What matters is condition and capacity: insulation that is intact, connections that are tight and cool, enough circuits for how the house is used, and protection appropriate to each room. Plenty of houses wired decades ago are in sound condition. The signals worth acting on are heat at devices, repeated breaker trips, insulation that crumbles when disturbed, and scorch marks or smells anywhere.

Will a rewire need a permit and inspection?

Work of this kind is permitted work, and concealed wiring is inspected before it is covered up, which is the whole point of the inspection. That sequence affects scheduling — walls stay open until the rough-in has been seen — so it belongs in the plan from the start rather than arriving as a surprise.
