Flickering covers everything from a bulb that needs tightening to a failing service connection, and the difference matters. The good news is that you can get most of the way to an answer by noticing two things: how much of the house is affected, and whether it happens at a particular moment.
Start with how much of the house is affected
This single question splits the causes almost cleanly in half. One fixture flickering is nearly always local to that fixture. Several fixtures across different rooms flickering together cannot be local, because they have nothing in common except the wiring that feeds them — so the cause is upstream, at a shared point.
The second question is timing. Flicker that happens at random is different from flicker that happens the moment the air conditioning starts, the refrigerator cycles, or the microwave goes on. Anything that correlates with a large load starting is telling you about capacity or about a connection under strain.
One fixture, on its own
Usually the least alarming case. A bulb not seated properly in its socket, a socket whose contact has weakened with age and heat, or a bulb reaching the end of its life. Older fluorescent fittings flicker as a ballast fails, which is a component replacement rather than a wiring problem.
The exception worth knowing: if a single fitting repeatedly kills bulbs early, or the flicker is accompanied by any discolouration around the socket or the fitting running hot, the problem is heat at a connection rather than the bulbs. That is worth looking at rather than continuing to replace lamps.
Dimmers and LEDs, which flicker for their own reasons
A very large share of modern flickering complaints are a compatibility problem rather than a fault. Dimmers designed for incandescent lamps work by cutting part of each cycle, and an LED lamp draws so little current that many older dimmers cannot regulate it smoothly. The result is flicker, shimmer, or a lamp that will not go below a certain level.
The fix is matching the parts: LED lamps marked as dimmable, on a dimmer designed for LED loads, ideally with the manufacturer's compatibility list checked. It is worth recognising this case, because it looks exactly like a wiring fault and is not one. What distinguishes it is that it only affects lamps on the dimmed circuit, and only when dimmed.
Flicker the moment something large starts
Motors draw substantially more current starting than running. An air conditioning compressor, a well pump, a garage door opener or a large power tool causes a brief dip in voltage as it starts, and lights on the same system respond by dimming momentarily.
A slight, brief dim when a big motor starts is normal and not worth worrying about. What is not normal is a pronounced dip, a dip that lasts more than an instant, or one that has become noticeably worse over time. That progression usually means either the circuits are undersized for what is now on them, or a connection somewhere is deteriorating and adding resistance. Houses running modern loads on service equipment sized decades ago see this frequently.
A loose connection, which is the one to take seriously
Every joint in a circuit is a place where the connection can loosen. Thermal cycling — heating under load, cooling when idle — works at terminations over years, and aluminum conductors move more than copper as they do it. A loose termination is a small area of high resistance, and high resistance under current produces heat.
This is why flicker matters more than it seems to. The flicker is the same physical event as the heating: intermittent contact. Left alone, a loose connection gets hotter, oxidises, gets worse, and eventually arcs. Flickering that affects a whole room or several rooms, or that comes with buzzing or any smell, belongs in this category until proven otherwise — and the devices themselves are often where it is found, which is why warm outlets and switches and flickering turn up in the same houses.
Lights brightening in one place and dimming in another
This is the specific pattern worth learning, because it has one main cause and it is a serious one. A residential service is split into two halves. They share a neutral, which carries the imbalance between them and holds each half at the right voltage. If that neutral connection degrades — at the panel, at the meter, or on the service conductors — the two halves stop being held steady, and load on one side pushes the voltage on the other side up.
What you observe is lights dimming in some rooms while, at the same moment, lights in other rooms get brighter. Sometimes it tracks a large appliance switching on. The reason it is urgent is that the raised half is being supplied above its normal voltage, which damages electronics and appliances, and the failing connection itself is a heat source at the service equipment. If you recognise this pattern, it should be looked at now rather than scheduled.
When the flicker is not your house at all
Some flickering originates on the supply side, and there are two clues. If the whole house including every circuit flickers together, and especially if it coincides with weather, the cause may be on the distribution network rather than inside the property. And if neighbouring houses see it at the same time, it is almost certainly not your wiring.
That is worth establishing early, because it changes who to call. Your utility handles everything up to the point where their equipment meets yours; the house side is an electrician's. What actually gets done about it
Diagnosis first, because the causes above have almost nothing in common. That means establishing the pattern — which fixtures, what timing, what correlates — then working from the shared point backwards: measuring voltage under load rather than at rest, checking terminations for heat, and inspecting the connections at the panel and the service.
Some of these are ten-minute fixes. A dimmer mismatch is a component swap. A loose termination is a tightening or a re-termination. A degraded service neutral is service work and is not small. What they have in common is that guessing between them is expensive: replacing bulbs and fittings for months is the usual cost of not diagnosing it, and it does nothing about the case that matters.
