An energy audit is a survey that measures where a house loses energy, rather than guessing. It is the right tool if you want to know where your consumption actually goes before spending money on reducing it. It is worth knowing in advance that most of what it finds is building fabric — insulation, air leakage, ductwork — rather than anything to do with wiring.
What an audit actually is
A structured inspection combining measurement with a walkthrough. The assessor looks at the building envelope, the heating and cooling equipment, the ductwork, the water heater, the appliances and the lighting, then quantifies the losses and produces a prioritised report.
The value is in the prioritisation. Anyone can produce a list of things that could be improved; the useful output is which two or three items account for most of the loss in yourhouse, because that is what separates spending money well from spending it on whatever is easiest to sell.
The levels, because the word covers several things
A free utility walkthrough. Some providers offer a basic assessment, often with LED lamps or a smart thermostat included. Genuinely worth taking if offered, but it is a walkthrough rather than a diagnostic, and it typically involves no pressure testing.
A professional diagnostic audit. The real thing: blower door testing, thermal imaging, duct leakage testing, combustion safety checks where there are fuel-burning appliances, and a written report with prioritised recommendations.
An audit tied to a rebate or financing programme. Some efficiency programmes require an audit before and after work to verify improvement. Whether anything like this is available in your area, and on what terms, is worth asking your own provider — programmes change and vary by utility, and note that Lawton-area homes are not all served by the same provider.
The blower door test, which is the core of it
A calibrated fan is sealed into an external doorway and depressurises the house, and the airflow needed to maintain that pressure difference is a direct measure of how leaky the building is. This turns “it feels draughty” into a number that can be compared before and after work.
With the house depressurised, air is drawn in through every gap, which makes leaks findable by hand or with a smoke pencil. In this climate that matters more than people expect: air leakage means humid outdoor air entering all summer, and dehumidifying it is part of what the air conditioning is paying for.
The recurring finding is that the leaks are not where anyone assumes. Not the windows, usually, but top plates, recessed light fittings, attic hatches, plumbing and wiring penetrations, and the join between house and garage.
Thermal imaging, and the part relevant to wiring
A thermal camera shows surface temperature, so with a temperature difference across the walls it reveals missing insulation, thermal bridging and air paths that are invisible otherwise.
The same instrument, pointed at electrical equipment under load, shows something quite different: a connection generating heat. This is the one genuine overlap between energy work and electrical work, and it is underused. A loose or corroded termination at a breaker, a device or a junction runs hotter than its neighbours, and that shows up clearly on a thermal image long before anything smells or fails.
Two caveats worth having. It has to be done under load, because a bad connection at rest looks like a good one. And an energy auditor is looking for insulation problems, not electrical ones — if they mention a warm spot at the panel, that is a finding to act on rather than an aside. It belongs with the other signs a panel is failing.
What an audit typically finds
In houses of this region and vintage, with reasonable consistency: attic insulation thinner than current practice or unevenly distributed; duct leakage, sometimes substantial, with cooled air delivered into an attic; air leakage at the ceiling plane, which is where it costs most; an air conditioner that is either oversized, undercharged or fighting dirty coils; and a water heater with no insulation on the tank or the first run of pipe.
All of that is building and HVAC work. It is also, in most houses, where the money actually is — which is the same conclusion what actually lowers an electric bill reaches from the other direction.
The findings that do land with an electrician
A smaller set, but real. Recessed light fittings leaking air into the attic are a classic audit finding, and the fix is airtight fittings rated for insulation contact rather than sealing around the existing ones — which is fitting work.
Old fluorescent and incandescent fittings in garages, outbuildings and outdoor locations, where the conversion never happened and the run hours are long.
No controls on lighting that runs unattended, particularly exterior and security lighting, where a timer or photocell removes hours of run time — see outdoor lighting and controls.
Insufficient capacity for the recommended equipment. This is the one that surprises people. An audit that recommends a heat pump water heater, a mini-split system or variable-speed equipment has recommended things with specific circuit requirements, and a house on a small or full service may need capacity added before any of it can be installed. Finding that out at the quoting stage is much better than mid-installation.
Equipment drawing more than it should, which is the fault case rather than the efficiency case — a failing element, a short-cycling pump, a struggling compressor.
What you can usefully check yourself
Not a substitute for measurement, but free. Look at attic insulation depth and whether it is even — thin patches and gaps around the hatch are common. Feel for draughts at outlets and switches on exterior walls, at the attic hatch, and where the garage meets the house, on a windy day or a cold one. Check whether the water heater tank and pipe are insulated. Note whether any lamps are still incandescent or halogen. Look at your bills across a year to see how much is seasonal, which tells you how much of the total is cooling.
What you should not do is investigate anything electrical beyond noticing it. A warm outlet or switch cover is worth acting on, not opening — outlets and switches covers why warmth matters.
Whether it is worth having one
Probably yes if bills are high and you do not know why, if you are about to spend real money on insulation or HVAC and want it aimed correctly, if the house is uncomfortable in ways that suggest air leakage or duct problems, or if you have just bought an older house and want a baseline.
Probably not yet if you already know the attic insulation is thin and the air conditioner is twenty years old — you do not need a test to prioritise that. Or if your bill has jumped suddenly, because that is a fault pattern rather than an efficiency pattern, and diagnosis is the faster route.
The distinction worth holding onto: an audit tells you where energy goes in a house that is working as designed. It is not the right tool for finding out why something has suddenly changed.
Where an electrician comes in
Mostly after the audit, on the subset of findings that are electrical: airtight recessed fittings, lighting and controls, dedicated circuits for equipment being replaced, and capacity where recommended upgrades need more than the service can currently give.
Sometimes before it, in one specific case: if the house has symptoms as well as high bills — breakers tripping more than they used to, warm devices, flickering, a GFCI that has started tripping — those are faults, and a fault should be found before an efficiency survey is commissioned. Wasted energy is one consequence of a fault, and rarely the one that matters most.
